Awesome book cover Friday: Sad Monsters

**You should all check out my current giveaway for a free book — you have until December 20 to enter! Good luck!**

Today’s pick is Sad Monsters: Growling on the Outside, Crying on the Inside by author Frank Lesser and illustrator Willie Rel — and it’s also book cover No. 50, hooray!

Sad Monsters by Frank Lesser

Here’s a description:

Monsters have it tough. Besides being deeply misunderstood, they suffer from very real problems: Mummies have body image issues, Godzilla is going through an existential crisis, and creatures from the black lagoon face discrimination from creatures from the white lagoon. At heart, these monsters are human; after all, you are what you eat. Quirkily illustrated, Sad Monsters hilariously documents the trials and tribulations of all the undead creatures monster-mad readers have grown to love, from vampires and werewolves, to chupacabras and sphinxes, and even claw-footed bathtubs.

I love the composition of this cover: great quote, great title. The grey nicely conveys the feeling of sadness while the brown of the monster in the middle helps him stand out. Since the background is blank, you can see that he’s all alone … poor guy!

What do you like about it? Also, feel free to email me your favorite covers. Bookstores are great places to stumble across them. I like to snap a picture with my phone, so the title and author are clearly visible (along with the art), and then send it to myself. :) I encourage you to do the same so I can feature them here on the blog!

  1. Oh that is just wonderful! I LOVE! And that Colbert quote, hahahahaha. He’s so funny. I love the monster, he needs to be my phone wallpaper this week. The font for “Sad Monsters” is perfect for this cover. Great choice, Stephanie. Thanks!
